Prairie Star Farms is committed to rigorous food safety standards, high quality animal care, and careful management of the environment while also giving back to our local communities. These are the actions we take to ensure we deliver on what matters most to our customers and consumers.

Hen Well-Being

Considering safe, nutritious eggs come from healthy hens, it goes without question that the care and comfort of our hens is essential to our farm. From chick to egg-laying hen, we closely monitor hen health and provide the necessary vaccinations and veterinary care to prevent the spread of disease. Our hens have continuous access to nutritious food, water and fresh air within our barns.

Biosecurity is enforced by limiting visitors within barns. Our farms have also added drive-through disinfect systems to clean all vehicles and farm equipment when entering the property. In addition, barns are secured to prevent the risk of contamination from other animals and predators, further helping to ensure the health of all flocks.

Prairie Star Farms also participates in the United Egg Producers (UEP) Certified program. The voluntary program assures customers that all eggs with the UEP Certified seal have originated from farms dedicated to following responsible, science-based farming methods designed to ensure hen welfare.

Safe Foods

At Prairie Star Farms, food safety is a top priority and everyone's job. Every employee is required to complete a comprehensive training program regarding safe food-handling practices and procedures. Further, employees are assigned to Quality Control and Food Safety assignments to ensure all internal and external standards are not just met, but exceeded.

Our processes also ensure that food safety is always top of mind. All eggs are washed and sanitized in a mild bath in excess of 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Eggs are then analyzed by a computerized system to detect any dirt, cracks or imperfections. They are then evaluated for grade, size and quality.

Eggs are packed and shipped daily, 365 days a year, to ensure customers receive the safest and freshest eggs as quickly as possible.

Prairie Star Farms further adds to its food safety protocols by:

  • Including on-site USDA inspectors at all of our facilities. The inspectors ensure that all government rules and regulations pertaining to sanitation and egg quality are met.
  • Following regular mandated FDA testing for Salmonella enteriditis (SE).
  • Continuing to fulfill audits and maintain Safe Quality Food (SQF) Level 3 certifications, the highest level attainable, which all of our facilities have achieved.
  • Participating as members of the Ohio Poultry Association and adhering to all association programs designed to ensure food safety.

Environmental Responsibility

We take seriously the impact we have on the environment and the land entrusted to our care and management. And, because we live where we work, environmental responsibility is more than just a good idea – it's essential to maintaining our quality of life.

On our farms, we follow regulatory guidelines to ensure proper management of manure and wastewater. The majority of our barns use belt systems that immediately remove manure from barns and can be stored and dried for use by local farmers as a natural fertilizer for their crops. Wastewater is also collected in retention ponds and treated by breaking down any solids before being reapplied to fields to enhance local farmland.

In addition, Prairie Star Farms participates in the Livestock Environmental Permitting Program (LEPP), which is an Ohio Department of Agriculture program that regulates how farms handle manure and wastewater, as well as manage flies, rodents and other pests.

Our Communities

At Prairie Star Farms, we are committed and active members of our local communities. Our farms donate high-quality eggs throughout the year to the local foodbank. In addition, we regularly participate in statewide egg donations through the Ohio Poultry Association.

Our farms are also committed to giving back and supporting local events annually, such as donating regularly to our local and regional foodbanks, participating in breakfast and Easter fundraisers, and sponsoring a variety of events for nonprofit organizations.
